XRP vs Ethereum for Tokenisation
Speed vs programmability, cost vs ecosystem — an honest comparison of the two leading RWA chains

The Two Camps
When institutions choose where to tokenise real-world assets, the debate almost always comes down to two blockchains: Ethereum (the incumbent, most tokenised assets live there today) and the XRP Ledger (the specialist, built for fast cheap settlement).
Head to Head
Speed & Cost
- XRPL: 3-5 second settlement, fractions of a penny per transaction
- Ethereum: ~12 second block time (faster with L2s), but fees historically high — $1-50+ per transaction in busy periods (cheaper on L2s like Base/Arbitrum)
Programmability
- Ethereum: full smart-contract programmability — any financial logic can be coded, from complex derivatives to DAOs. This is why most RWA projects started there (Ondo, Centrifuge, Maple)
- XRPL: limited smart contracts (Hooks are early-stage), but tokenisation primitives — issued currencies, DEX, AMM, NFTs, freeze/clawback — are native protocol features
Ecosystem
- Ethereum: the largest developer and DeFi ecosystem; massive liquidity, tooling and institutional familiarity
- XRPL: smaller ecosystem, but deep in payments — Ripple's bank network, RLUSD stablecoin, and cross-border focus
Institutional Credibility
- XRPL: Ripple's decade of bank partnerships and regulatory engagement (including the landmark SEC case) give it enterprise credibility
- Ethereum: ETF-approved, SEC-clear, the default choice for US institutions — but carries more regulatory noise around DeFi
Where Each Chain Wins
- Ethereum wins: complex financial products, DeFi composability, anything needing custom smart-contract logic, and the deepest liquidity
- XRPL wins: simple, high-volume, low-cost assets — stablecoins, payments, commodities, anything needing fast settlement and regulatory features built in
The Reality: It's Not Either/Or
Increasingly, institutions use both. Tokenisation platforms issue assets on multiple chains, and bridges move liquidity between them. A gold token might trade on Ethereum for DeFi composability and settle on XRPL for payments.
The honest framing: Ethereum is the general-purpose computer of tokenisation; XRPL is the specialised settlement rail. Different assets, different needs, different homes.
Which Matters for You?
If you're an investor in XRP tokenisation, what matters is that XRPL's niche — fast, cheap, compliant asset settlement — is genuinely underserved, and Ripple is aggressively building in it (RLUSD, partnerships, AMM adoption).
The risk: if tokenisation stays dominated by Ethereum's ecosystem, XRPL's slice could stay small. The opportunity: if high-volume RWA settlement becomes the norm, XRPL's speed advantage becomes decisive.
The Bottom Line
Ethereum has the ecosystem; XRPL has the speed and cost. For tokenised assets that trade like payments — stablecoins, commodities, high-volume instruments — XRPL is the better technical fit. For complex, programmable finance, Ethereum remains king.
